Before beginning your job search, learn what competitive salary looks like for people doing comparable work. Having this knowledge empowers you to negotiate your salary with confidence. This applies whether you plan on staying at your current employer and/or considering changing jobs.

Research and Compare Your Salary
You must factor in regional and national cost-of-living in order to make a fair judgement. Some ares of the US have a much higher living cost, e.g. San Francisco or New York City. State income taxes also figure into your decision.
